A discomforting love of death in Europe

In two European nations where euthanasia has been approved, people are frightened over the prospect of being hospitalized. 

Brothers of Charity, a Catholic Church religious order responsible for the majority of hospitalized psychiatric patients in Belgium, recently voted in favor of allowing its patients to be euthanized.

Human Life International spokesman Joseph Meaney lives in Paris and tells OneNewsNow that because boards are often comprised of lay people, the decision is not the fault of the priests.

He points to the decision as a sign of confusion in Belgium.

“I mean they say they maintain their pro-life values,” he explains, “and then they’re offering euthanasia because they think that patients might need that.”

He indicates that people have become hesitant to enter a hospital or psychiatric facility.

“It is a major problem in Belgium to find a nursing home or a hospital that does not do euthanasia,” he explains, “and what is even more disturbing is that euthanasia has happened there on people who didn’t even ask for it. So it’s a real serious issue and people are scared.”

A similar fear exists among many in the Netherlands, where a disability rights organization developed wallet-size cards stating that if the signer is admitted to a hospital, euthanasia is not to be administered.
